Mets 1B Dominic Smith said he does not believe his strained right quad injury is too concerning considering how early it is in spring training.
"It definitely sucks, but it's part of the game," Smith said on Sunday. The 22-year-old will undergo an MRI on Monday to determine the severity of the injury.
Smith just returned to the Mets' lineup on Saturday after manager Mickey Callaway benched him earlier in the week for showing up late to a team meeting. He went 1-or-1 with two runs in New York's second spring training game on Saturday.
"We had a private conversation and we both came to a clear understanding," Smith said about talking with Callaway on the benching. "Like I said, stuff like yesterday, it's in the past and today's a new day."
Smith is hoping that his injury won't hinder his ability to compete for the first-base slot on the Opening Day roster. As of now, he is expected to start the season in Triple-A, with veteran Adrian Gonzalez expected to be starting in the majors.
