Mets closer Jeurys Familia, who is suspended for the first 15 games of the season due to the alleged domestic violence incident he was involved with in October, will likely begin a rehab assignment on Friday to tune up for his return, manager Terry Collins said.
Barring any postponed games, Familia will be eligible to return to the Mets on April 20 against the Phillies at Citi Field.
Addison Reed has been the Mets' closer in Familia's absence, with Fernando Salas serving in a setup role.
Reed, 28, has tossed three perfect innings (three appearances) this season while striking out four batters and earning one save.
Familia, 27, had a 2.55 ERA (2.39 FIP) and 1.21 WHIP while striking out 84 batters in 77 2/3 innings as he saved a team-record 51 games for the Mets last season.
