Now Commenting On:

Veteran relievers Jose Valverde and Kyle Farnsworth were always intended to be a bridge between Opening Day and promoting arms from Triple-A to round out the big-league bullpen, GM Sandy Alderson said on Tuesday.

Valverde posted a 5.66 ERA over 20 2/3 innings for the Mets, while Farnsworth had a 3.18 ERA in 17 innings. They blew three saves, combined, for the Mets. Both players have been released by the Mets.

The Mets have the ninth-best ERA in the National League and 15th-best in the majors.

"And that's with some huge numbers in there, from guys like John Lannan" and Valverde, Alderson said.

The team is one of the best in not allowing inherited runners to score, and are only led by Atlanta, Boston, San Diego and Cleveland.
