Now Commenting On:

Free-agent closer Francisco Rodriguez said today that he would welcome the opportunity to come back to the Mets and to "redeem himself," the team's beat writers said on Twitter.

Rodriguez is playing for Team Venezuela, who played a game against the Mets today at Tradition Field.

"I failed when I was [in New York]," Rodriguez said, according to Andy Martino of the Daily News. "To be able to get one more shot, to go back and get it done, that would be great."

Martino says, while the Mets won't rule out a reunion with Rodriguez, improving the bullpen is not pressing issue for the team right now.

K-Rod would bring experience to the bullpen. However, he didn't have a good year last year so it’s questionable how much he would help them this year. His strikeout rate went down while his walk rate went up in 2012, and while right-handed hitters didn't homer against him last year, they hit him at a .260 clip, which is 72 points above his career mark. He also allowed eight home runs last year, which was the highest mark against him since 2003.

All-in-all, I think the Mets need to move past K-Rod at this point. That ship has sailed, and he's representative of an ugly past for this franchise. I like the current options and makeup of their current bullpen, even though it comes with question marks. Besides, if they're going to bring players in, it should be for the outfield - that's a far bigger problem than their bullpen right now...
