In three starts since joining Double-A Binghamton, 23-year-old Mets LHP prospect Steven Matz is 1-1 with a 2.41 ERA and 20 strike outs in 18.2 innings.

"The one thing I love about Matz is he has a great head on his shoulders, he’s a competitor," Triple-A pitching coach Frank Viola recently told SNY.TV's Robert Brender. "He does all the little things you need from a pitcher to make him better. ... I think the big thing now is getting that breaking ball, the curveball, over more consistently to get him through the lineup a second, third, fourth time through. Once he’s able to do that, gain that experience, he’s going to move up the ladder really quick."
