Niese pitched well despite losing his last start to the Braves when he allowed a run in six innings. It was the 17th consecutive start Niese has allowed two walks or less and has pitched six innings or more. Niese has been roughed up in three career starts against the Brewers - he's 1-0 with an 8.10 ERA in 13 1/3 innings.
Mike Fiers (9-7, 3.05 ERA) will start for the Brewers tonight.
Fiers has been outstanding since joining the Brewers rotation at the end of May, allowing two earned runs or less in 12 of his 18 starts. Fiers earned his ninth win of the season against the Cardinals in his last outing when he allowed a run with five strikeouts in five innings of work. Fiers is making his first career appearance against the Mets tonight.
Niese has clearly turned a corner in his young career. He has learned how to pitch efficiently, throw quality strikes consistently with both his cutter and curveball, and limit the damage when he isn't at his best. It's also looking likely he will finish this season and on a high note at that, something he has struggled to do up until this point in his career.
