The Mets spent this past week on the road in Pittsburgh and Milwaukee.
After Monday's game was rained out, the Mets played a traditional doubleheader against the Pirates on Tuesday. New York dropped both games, including the matinee against former Mets pitcher Jon Niese.
It was Deja vu for Kelly Johnson and the Mets on Tuesday. Johnson was once again acquired by New York from Atlanta, this time in exchange for Triple-A pitcher Akeel Morris. The hope is that Johnson will provide some versatility off the bench and a security blanket at third base for the injured David Wright.
Noah Syndergaard took the mound Wednesday night and helped the Mets salvage a game against the Pirates. Despite not being at his best, Syndergaard worked his way through six innings. Wilmer Flores was the hero of the night, stepping up to drive in the game-winning run with a pinch-hit RBI single in the 10th inning.
The 2016 MLB Amateur Draft began Thursday night. The Mets drafted two college pitchers from Long Island in the first round, Boston College righty Justin Dunn and UConn lefty Anthony Kay.
Bartolo Colon toed the rubber in the series opener against the Brewers on Thursday night. The ageless wonder allowed only one run over seven innings in a Mets' 5-2 win.
On Friday night Matt Harvey continued his resurgence, throwing six innings and striking out eight while earning a no-decision. The Mets would walk away with a 2-1 win after a bizarre play in the top of the 11th. A Matt Reynolds line drive caused confusion on the base paths and in the field. The winning run was allowed to score after the Brewers infield failed to recognition who was a live runner on the bases and who was not.
The Mets offense struggled Saturday and Sunday, dropping the final two games of the series and finishing the week 3-4.
Neil Walker, who looked tense and shaky in the field in his return to Pittsburgh, is bruised and battered. First he took a one-hopper off his body that caused him to miss action with a bruised rib cage; x-rays would later reveal no fractures. Then on Saturday Walker would remove himself from the game due to lower back pain. Walker is hopeful that he can return to the starting lineup Tuesday night.
Prior to Sunday's game manager Terry Collins was hospitalized and kept overnight for further testing in Milwaukee. Collins is reportedly alert and was being held as more of a precaution.
The Mets return home Tuesday for a series against the Pirates before welcoming the Braves into town over the weekend.
Yankees: 'The Bronx Bombers' started their week off strong at Yankee Stadium. The Yankees swept a four-game series against the Angels and took the series opener against the Tigers on Friday night.
Carlos Beltran stayed hot at the plate, hitting a home run in three consecutive games over that stretch.
Rookie Chris Parmlee landed on the DL the day after hitting a game-winning home run Thursday night and is expected to miss month of action with a hamstring injury.
In the MLB Draft, the Yankees selected high school outfielder Blake Rutherford in the first round on Thursday.
The weekend ended on a sour note, with New York dropping the final two games against Detroit.
The Yankees announced that they have signed former Mets first baseman Ike Davis to a Major League deal on Saturday and will be added to the 25-man roster this week.
Teams have begun scouting the Yankees' pitching, most notably starter Nathan Eovaldi and the 'Big 3' in the bullpen in the event that New York becomes sellers at the trade deadline.
This week the Yankees will travel to Colorado for a quick two-game set before spending the weekend in Minnesota for four games.
Jets: The Jets' players seem to believe that Ryan Fitzpatrick will return to New York; going so far as to leave his locker unoccupied at the team's training facility.
Tight end Kellen Davis suffered a broken thumb during OTAs. He underwent surgery and is expected to be ready for training camp.
Knicks: Head coach Jeff Hornacek believes Carmelo Anthony is still in the prime of his career and can lead New York to the NBA Finals. Hornacek cited the Utah Jazz of the late-1990's, when Karl Malone, John Stockon and he were a part of a core group that reached the finals twice at an older age than Anthony.
NHL: The NHL offseason has begun after the Pittsburgh Penguins won the Stanley Cup on Sunday night.
