The 35-year-old Gonzalez, who was designated for assignment by the Braves after being acquired from the Dodgers earlier this offseason, dealt with a back injury last season while hitting just .242/.287/.355.
He hit .285/.349/.435 with 18 HR in 156 games for the Dodgers in 2016 after hitting .275/.350/.480 in 156 games in 2015.
Mets GM Sandy Alderson suggested Wednesday that Dominic Smith is not in the team's immediate plans at first base, meaning that if healthy, Gonzalez will likely be the starter at first base on Opening Day.
