The first pitch in Los Angeles is an hour after one in Williamsport, Pa, where the Jackie Robinson West Little League All-Stars of Chicago will meet South Korea in the Little League World Series championship game at 3 p.m. Granderson tweeted a congratulatory message Saturday after the Chicago team defeated Las Vegas 7-5 in the U.S. final.
That was after he wore the team's jersey in batting practice before Saturday's game at Dodger Stadium (Daily News, Aug. 23).
Granderson, a Chicago-area native, is sure to be keeping tabs on the final. Last winter, he met some of the Jackie Robinson West players and coaches at an outreach event, and has friends who played in the league (CSN Chicago, Aug. 17).
Granderson, 33, donated $5 million to build Curtis Granderson Field at the University of Illinois-Chicago, where he earned a business degree. It's part of his effort to grow the game in urban areas and elsewhere.
It's the first time since 1967 a team from a major American city has reached the championship game.
