As the Mets trickle in ahead of spring training officially starting, spirits are high and optimism is fresh for 2018. The Mets pitching staff, plagued with injuries in 2017, is ready to get to work for 2018. But not before having some fun with each other.
Robert Gsellman was asked if he put extra emphasis on his athleticism and flexibility this offseason as Noah Syndergaard did. Gsellman took the opportunity as an opening to poke some fun at Syndergaard.
"No, (Noah) is just not athletic," Gsellman joked, via Laura Albanese of Newsday. "He's like a fat guy running in flip-flops."
After Jacob deGrom cut his flowing hair short after the season, Gsellman and Syndergaard have had questions if they might follow deGrom. Syndergaard said he won't cut his, but deGrom would consider it, via Albanese.
On the field, Gsellman will look to improve upon a disappointing 2017. It was his first full season in the MLB and it didn't go as his impressive 2016 cameo would have suggested. He had a 5.19 ERA and 1.5 WHIP in 119 2/3 IP with 82 K in 2017.
The Mets first spring training game is Friday, February 23 at 1:10 p.m.
