Mets SS Asdrubal Cabrera was not in the lineup against the Cardinals on Wednesday due to a sore right hamstring, manager Mickey Callaway said.
"He said he could have played today, but I made sure that he didn't," Callaway said ahead of Wednesday's 9-1 loss to the Cardinals. "Just give him a day of rest. We don't need to lose him."
Cabrera, who needed a pinch runner late in Tuesday night's extra-inning win over the Cardinals, did not appear in Wednesday's game.
Entering play on Wednesday, Cabrera sat atop the NL with a .349 batting average and was fourth in the NL with 12 extra-base hits. Of his extra-base hits, he had eight doubles, which was tied for second in the majors.
Cabrera, who is in his third season with the Mets, has four home runs and 12 RBIs to go along with his .349 batting average in 21 games.
