After an off day on Monday, the Mets enter Tuesday night with a prime opportunity to keep their hot streak alive against the NL East-leading Braves. And if they can get through their foe in Atlanta over these next three games, their playoff odds will only continue to grow.
Through this streak that's seen 15 wins in their last 17 games, the Mets have jolted their way into the playoff conversation -- something that didn't seem possible just a couple weeks ago.
Right now, the Mets are still one game back of the second Wild Card slot that is currently held by the Cardinals. And the Brewers are still just a half game in front of them in the standings as well.
But, according to Fangraphs, the Mets' playoff odds trump them all.
Taking into account the Mets' hot play, Fangraphs is projecting that the Mets have a 41.9 percent chance of winning a Wild Card slot when the regular season comes to an end. Add in their 4.2 percent chance of winning the division (they're eight games back of the Braves), the Mets have a 46.1 percent chance of reaching the playoffs.
The Brewers, who have gone an even 5-5 in their last 10 games, has their Wild Card chances projected at 18.8 percent. Even the Cardinals have lower odds than the Mets at 23.1 percent of winning the Wild Card spot they currently hold. They've also been lackluster recently, losing six of their last 10.
Under the Mets by one game are the Phillies, who are very low at 5.6 percent to win a Wild Card spot.
So, as long as the Mets can continue to post games in the win column just as they have recently, these odds will only continue to go up. They'll have a tough task facing the Braves twice as well as the Indians and Cubs in their next five series, but things have been simply going the Mets way. Their hitting and pitching have finally been working in sync, and even when they're down, they find a way to claw back into games.
If they can keep that going, the odds will continue to be in their favor to play for the World Series come October.
