The Mets (13-11) fell back in a first-place tie in the NL East after they lost to the Phillies 6-0 on Wednesday. They are off Thursday before beginning a three-game series at Citi Field against the Milwaukee Brewers on Friday.
Here's what went down on Wednesday:
While Jason Vargas allowed just one run in 4 2/3 innings, the Mets left nine runners on base and went 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position in Wednesday's 6-0 loss to Philadelphia.
A day after throwing a fastball up and in to Rhys Hoskins, Jacob Rhame allowed a home run to Hoskins in the ninth inning on Wednesday, and Hoskins took his time -- 34 seconds -- trotting around the bases. Neither Rhame nor some of his Mets teammates took issue with Hoskins, as Rhame said, "Make a better pitch, he doesn't get to run the bases."
Jacob deGrom could return from his brief injured list stint to pitch on Friday against the Brewers.
Gio Gonzalez is officially off the market after signing with Milwaukee. The Mets, according to SNY's Andy Martino, debated if he was a significant upgrade over Vargas and other internal options. So who else could the Mets target if they decide to get another pitcher?
How impressive was Zack Wheeler on Monday? He became the first player this season to throw a pitch 100 mph or faster and hit a ball 100 mph or faster.
