In what might be the worst kept secret in the game, baseball insiders all seem think the Mets will acquire 19-year-old RHP prospect Neil Kozikowski as the player to be named later from May's Ike Davis deal with the Pirates.
Kosikowski was drafted with Pittsburgh’s eighth-round pick last summer. He can't officially be moved to the Mets until June 21, 2014, which will be one year after he signed his first contract.
I've heard the Mets had interest in drafting Kozikowski, who is from Connecticut. I'm told by people who've watched him that he's tall and lanky, he has a nice curve ball, and slings a low 90s fastball, while showing a unique command of the strike zone for his age.
In 24 innings in the Gulf Coast League after being drafted, he had a 2.63 ERA in 24 innings. He walked just three batters.
He has yet to pitch in 2014, spending time in extended Spring Training, which is another strong indication he's the guy getting moved to complete the Davis deal.
