Mejia had not allowed a home run since June 1.
“I tried to throw outside. That was outside,” Mejia said after the game. “He got it. I wanted to get ahead. I tried to throw the first pitch for a strike. In that situation, I don’t want to throw the first pitch for a ball. ... I think he was waiting for a fastball, because I threw a fastball away and he swung.”
Opposing hitters are batting .345 on first pitches against Mejia this season.
He is 0-3 with a blown save and a 7.25 ERA in his last seven appearances.
