Now Commenting On:

The competition between Jenrry Mejia and Daisuke Matsuzaka is ongoing, and Mejia still has a shot at becoming the fifth starter in the rotation (Carig, March 21).

Matsuzaka is considered the leader for the fifth spot, but according to a source with the team, there is debate within the organization. If Mejia doesn't make the team, he will likely head to Triple-A to join their starting rotation.

Matsuzaka, who could earn $1.5 million on the MLB roster, can opt out of his contract with the Mets if he is not on the big league team by May 30 (Sherman, Feb. 16).

John Lannan, who was also competing for a starting job early in camp, will likely head to the bullpen as the team's second lefty, Terry Collins said earlier this spring (MetsBlog, Feb. 19).

Dillon Gee is expected to get the Opening Day start, with Bartolo Colon and Zack Wheeler following him. Jon Niese will likely start the season on the disabled list, but make his first start when the Mets need a fifth starter on April 6 (MetsBlog, March 20).
