Familia earned his ninth win of the season yesterday, improving to 9-9 with a 4.73 ERA in 28 starts this season - Familia will likely lead the International League with those 28 starts.
However, Familia averaged under five innings per start this year while walking 73 batters in only 137 innings.
[avatar name="hyde"]Toby Hyde: Over his last four starts, Familia has pitched to a 3.60 ERA, a 4 K/BB and an opponents’ batting average of .270. It’s not dominant, but it’s much, much better than the early season version of Familia who had an ERA above five in April and July and right around 4.50 in May and June. Crucially, he’s 22 making him younger still than many players in Savannah or St. Lucie.
Familia’s late-season progress is very, very encouraging. Whether or not the Mets call up Familia for a look in September this year, I hope the team stays patient with him and returns him to AAA (wherever) to begin 2013 where he can continue to work as a starter.
