Yesterday, Terry Collins said Familia would start one of the three games against the Marlins next week, although he did not indicate which game he might appear in.
Familia went 9-9 with a 4.73 ERA in 28 starts for Triple-A Buffalo this season. He allowed 72 earned runs, 145 hits, 73 walks and eight home runs in 137 innings.
He has pitched to an 8.64 ERA in 8 1/3 innings over seven relief appearances in September, although five of the seven earned runs he allowed came in 2/3 of an inning last week against the Phillies.
I was hoping Terry would find a slot for Familia down the stretch of the season, and I was hoping he'd get more than one look in the rotation. No matter, he needs to be examined as a starting pitcher at this point, even if he might ultimately end up in the bullpen. It's important the Mets start to figure out what they have in Familia not only for the Mets in 2013, but as a potential trade chip this winter as well.
