The Mets met with Santana's agent during the Winter Meetings, but are not optimistic about re-signing him (Martino, Jan. 6).
It was reported in late December that Santana was close to signing a minor league deal with someone (Cafardo, Dec. 29), but nothing official was ever announced.
Santana has not pitched in a big-league game since August, 2012. He underwent a second surgery to repair a torn capsule in his left shoulder this past April and missed the entire 2013 season.
The Mets hope to add a starting pitcher, “probably on a minor-league contract,” to compete for the final spot in the rotation, according to Sandy Alderson (Rubin, Jan. 7).
In addition to Santana, the Mets had reportedly shown interest Jerome Williams (DiComo, Dec. 7), Bruce Chen, John Lannan, Paul Maholm (Heyman, Dec. 10), Freddy Garcia (Puma, Dec. 10) and Daisuke Matsuzaka.
