Now Commenting On:

Free-agent LHP Johan Santana expects to throw off a mound this month and will look to either sign with a team and complete rehab in camp or wait and showcase himself to clubs later this spring (Rosenthal, Jan. 9).

The Mets met with Santana's agent during the Winter Meetings, but are not optimistic about re-signing him (Martino, Jan. 6).

It was reported in late December that Santana was close to signing a minor league deal with someone (Cafardo, Dec. 29), but nothing official was ever announced.

Santana has not pitched in a big-league game since August, 2012. He underwent a second surgery to repair a torn capsule in his left shoulder this past April and missed the entire 2013 season.

The Mets hope to add a starting pitcher, “probably on a minor-league contract,” to compete for the final spot in the rotation, according to Sandy Alderson (Rubin, Jan. 7).

In addition to Santana, the Mets had reportedly shown interest Jerome Williams (DiComo, Dec. 7), Bruce Chen, John LannanPaul Maholm (Heyman, Dec. 10), Freddy Garcia (Puma, Dec. 10) and Daisuke Matsuzaka.
