Seven or eight teams – including the Mets – have inquired about Santana this winter, according to someone with knowledge of the situation (Castillo, Dec. 8).
His agent – Chris Leible of the Legacy Agency – recently said on Twitter Santana is throwing from 150 feet on flat ground with no pain.
I suppose on a minor league deal, the Mets could take a flier on Johan and bring him back to camp. However, the Mets are looking for certainty for their starting pitching depth, and Santana is hardly a sure thing at this stage in his career. Remember, this is a second surgery on the capsule, there was plenty of uncertainty after the first procedure, and he is now in uncharted territory after the second. Still, I’d count on Santana, his athleticism and determination, along with his talent, to get back to the big leagues at some point – if there’s anyone who can do it, it’s Johan. But, it’s a big IF, and he probably wouldn’t be ready until sometime during the season, at best.
