Santana will miss all of the 2013 season.
Santana was diagnosed with a re-tear of the anterior capsule in his left shoulder on Thursday.
Santana will earn $25.5 million in the final year of a six-year, $137.5 million contract he signed before the 2008 season. The Mets will also be responsible for paying the $5.5 million buyout of his 2014 option.
I think I read 10 pitchers have had this surgery. Johan will be the first to have it twice. It's hard to imagine him ever pitching in a big-league uniform again. However, with his work ethic and focus, I'll assume nothing is ever beyond his reach until he says otherwise. In the end, if he's thrown his last pitch, he'll be remembered for having a brilliant, but short, career. He came out of nowhere -- through the Rule 5 Draft -- became the best pitcher in the game when he was at his peak, and then -- as quick as he emerged on the scene -- he faded. I wish him luck, because I'd love to see him throw again one day.
