Now Commenting On:

Mets LHP Jon Niese tossed seven shutout innings against the Marlins on Monday, lowering his ERA to 1.82 ERA, which is fifth-best in the National League.

"I give Niese a lot of credit," Marlins manager Mike Redmond said after the game (ESPN, May 6). "He looked good out there, and we had a tough time early on trying to figure him out. He pretty much shut us down."

Terry Collins said had no intention of leaving Niese in the game, since the pitcher had thrown 108 pitches and missed time in Spring Training due to elbow and shoulder pain.

"You don’t want to overdo it,” Collins said. “He worked hard to get out of that inning. That was what I had to do.”
