Valdespin is hitting just .182 with a .545 OPS against left-handed pitching this season - he's hit just .214 in his career against lefties.
Valdespin is hitting .263 with a .311 OBP and .750 OPS, two home runs and ten RBI in 61 plate appearances over 24 games this season.
Valdespin swings at about 43 percent of the pitches he sees, but he's swinging at nearly 35 percent of the pitches he sees outside the strike zone. Those numbers are pretty consistent with what he did last year as well, and that's a key contributor to the low on-base percentage. Yes, he has come up big in some key moments over the last year, but he needs to make some adjustments - especially against lefties - as he's not going to be able to sustain any consistent success with his approach at the plate. Don't get me wrong - I think Valdespin deserves an extended look on an everyday basis and while there is work to be done, I believe he deserves the opportunity to show he can grow into his raw talents.
