I wanted to post a follow up to my wrap-up on St. Lucie catchers, Josh Thole in particular. So, one of the features that I haven’t written enough about is that 2008 was Thole’s first season working primarily as a catcher.
The games at DH is merely derived by subtracting Thole’s games at catcher and first base from his total games played since games at DH is not listed separately for minor league players.
Thole’s offensive profile plays at catcher, and not as well at first. The important question is whether Thole himself, and not his offensive profile, can play catcher. Pay careful attention to the tools: hands, arm strength, agility rather than results here to predict future performance. Moreover, this issue of Thole’s defensive ability as a catcher, will not be resolved in the winter.
