The Mets are operating simultaneously as buyers and sellers as the July 31 trade deadline approaches, and the possibility that Edwin Diaz could be on the move is a real one. Here's the latest...
July 30, 11:12 AM:
The Mets are still evaluating the Braves' top prospects, reports MLB.com's Mark Bowman, who says that Diaz seems to be a more likely target for the Braves than Noah Syndergaard.
SNY's Andy Martino has reported on the Braves' interest in Zack Wheeler, who could be headed to the Astros.
July 30, 8:37 AM:
With other teams predicting that the Rays will make an "impactful" deal at the deadline, Tampa Bay has been doing background work on Diaz, reports Buster Olney of ESPN.
Diaz pitched on Sunday and will seemingly be available to pitch Tuesday night against the White Sox. If the Mets have a lead in the ninth inning and Diaz doesn't enter, it could be a sign that a trade is about to go down.
July 29, 1:27 PM:
The Dodgers are still in play when it comes to a potential trade for Diaz, reports SNY's Andy Martino, who adds that the Red Sox are not really in at the moment.
Los Angeles has a deep farm system with mutliple blue chip prospects, making them a very good potential fit as a trade partner for the Mets on Diaz.
July 29, 10:37 AM:
SNY's Andy Martino has been following the chatter about Diaz and the Red Sox, and it doesn't look like anything is coming together on that front.
Martino tweeted that there is "nothing hot" between both sides at the moment. There is still much time left, but as noted before, the Red Sox -- as well as every other team interested -- would have to blow away the Mets in a deal for the young closer.
July 29, 9:17 AM:
While the Red Sox have a farm system that is viewed as one of the worst in baseball, they are "confident they will make an imapct bullpen move," reports ESPN's Buster Olney.
Olney suggests that any offer from the Sox for Diaz would "presumably" include corner infielders Bobby Dalbec or Triston Casas. Neither of Casas is No. 90 on MLB Pipeline's Top 100 prospects list, while Dalbec is not on the list.
July 28, 9:03 PM:
The Mets are still willing to package Diaz with Zack Wheeler, to increase the return for Wheeler, reports SNY's Andy Martino, who adds that the Mets have been pleasantly surprised by the overall level of interest in Diaz.
July 27, 12:34 PM:
The Mets are receiving "heavy trade interest" in Diaz, reports SNY's Andy Martino.
According to Maritno, Diaz has broad appeal to teams that want to contend both this year and next. The Dodgers, Reds, Brewers and White Sox are among the clubs that have expressed interest.
