Now Commenting On:

This past off-season, the Mets offered 2B Daniel Murphy to the Astros in a deal to include 23-year-old SS prospect Jonathan Villar, according to a leaked document used for internal communication by Houston's front office (Deadspin, June 30).

The Mets were willing to trade Murphy, but the asking price was ‘substantial,’ according to people who checked in on him (Rubin, Dec. 11).

For instance, while the Orioles had interest (Sherman, Dec. 9), the Mets asked for top pitching prospect Dylan Bundy, among other players, which Baltimore quickly turned down (MLB Network Radio, Dec. 11).

It was recently reported that the Blue Jays and Giants, among others teams, remain interested in Murphy, according to columnist Andy Martino (Daily News, June 23). However, Murphy and the Mets are also open to discussing a contract extension, although they have yet to have any formal negotiations  (Daily News, June 25).

Murphy expected to earn around $9 million in 2015, after which he can become a free agent.

According to MLB Trade Rumors, based on his position, age and stats, Murphy is likely due a four- or five-year contract extension worth around $12 million per season (MLBTR, June 26).

The leaked document also indicates the Astros pitched the Mets on swapping Ike Davis for RHP Lucas Harrell, 29, and LHP Alex Sogard, 26, but the Mets turned it down.

Davis was eventually traded to the Pirates in May for relief pitchers LHP Blake Taylor and RHP Zack Thornton.
