2. Joel Sherman discussed Mets prospects in his 3UP this morning. There's some play-by-play of the conversations with the Rangers and Giants that ultimately landed Zack Wheeler, but his comments, clearly pulled from conversations with key decision-makers are interesting.
"Neither Cory Mazzoni nor Jack Leathersich is in the Mets’ major league camp. But they are two players the organization is excited about and worth watching during the season."That's high praise. Obviously, he has to get there first.
"They think outfielder Matt den Dekker is going to challenge for a Gold Glove some day."
3. At Baseball Prospectus, Bradley Ankrom writes about five NL prospects facing make-or-break seasons (his phrase) and includes Brad Holt. He lumped Holt into a group of 147 pitchers between 20 and 22 who picked up over 10 strikeouts per nine and threw 50 innings in the year they were drafted. A full 60% of the group did not reach the big leagues, while the elite of the group was Jamie Moyer, Mark Langston and Ted Lilly.
I'm mildly surprised to see Holt, who's run an ERA of 6.09 the last three seasons in AA with 144 strikeouts against 103 walks even still make pieces like this.
