Cohoon cruised through the first five innings yesterday (5 hits, 0 runs, 1 bb, 4 K), but ran into trouble in the sixth giving up a double, walk, and a three-run home run. Overall Cohoon still sports a 1.44 ERA, and has struck out 24 batters in 25 innings, while holding opponents to a .237 average.
Here are some of Mellen's observations:
- FB- 87-88, popped 88 quite often, but dipped to 86 towards the tail end. Late run away from RH batters. Good feel and command of FB, especially on outer third. Tends to stay away from pitching inside to RH and has trouble commanding on that side of plate.
- CH- 80-82. More of a straight change. Solid arm speed and keeping fluid when throwing it. CH can float and lack enough drop. Seemed to have good feel. Likes to throw that away as well.
- CB- 77-79. Not quite an over-hand curve. Good break down through the strike zone. Uses this pitch to throw inside RH and try to jam them. Threw the least out of his offerings, but mixed it in.
