Jacob deGrom dazzled in Philadelphia and delivered a complete game, helping the Mets beat Jake Arrieta and the Phillies, 3-1, on Saturday.
Now that's he's finally adding wins to his resume, Jacob deGrom is looking very much like a serious candidate for the National League Cy Young Award.
DeGrom earned his third victory in as many starts Saturday, throwing his third career complete game without allowing an unearned run in a 3-1 victory in Philadelphia.
For Mets manager Mickey Callaway, the answer for why he thinks that Jacob deGrom should win the Cy Young is simple: he's better than everybody else.
DeGrom is a Cy Young favorite, alongside Nationals RHP Max Scherzer.
"I think if you look at his home runs per inning, the BABIP, the FIP, he's better at all those things," Callaway said before the Mets game. "Scherzer has a .250 BABIP, which means he's getting fairly lucky and deGrom's numbers are still better."

The Mets are keeping LHP Jason Vargas in the rotation.

Mets ace Jacob deGrom has been the best pitcher in the National League this season. Better than Max Scherzer. Better than Aaron Nola. As it stands right now, he should be the frontrunner for the Cy Young award.
But he might not be, because of his won/loss record. And that's the one big difference between deGrom and the above pitchers...

Mets RHP Noah Syndergaard couldn't overcome a rough first inning in Friday's 4-2 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Park.
Syndergaard allowed a season-high four runs and gave up eight hits in 5 2/3 innings, including a poor first inning in which he allowed the first four batters to reach base before he even recorded an out.
The 25-year-old Syndergaard (8-3) allowed a leadoff single to Cesar Hernandez and walked Rhys Hoskins to bring up former teammate Asdrubal Cabrera, whose double to left field made it 1-0. Nick Williams followed with an RBI single to center that made it 2-0. Syndergaard got Carlos Santana to hit into a 3-6-3 double play, but Cabrera scored from third to make it 3-0.

It was roughly one year ago that Michael Conforto's All-Star season with the Mets was interrupted after dislocating his shoulder on a swing at Citi Field.
Finally, after months of struggling to get going, it appears Conforto is back to being the intense, competitive, classic left-handed No. 3 hitter the Mets took pride in last summer.
Since his batting average dropped to a season low .216 on July 15, Conforto is batting .320 with a .400 BABIP, a .400 OBP, .570 slugging percentage, six HR, seven doubles and 17 RBI in 26 games, during which the Mets are 13-13...

In late 2014, early 2015, Mets C Kevin Plawecki was widely considered the second-best catching prospect in baseball, according to more or less every every published top prospect list.
Three and a half years later, after years of being labeled only a backup catcher, he's starting to show that maybe, possibly, he can be counted on as every day catcher for the Mets.
Prior to his first call-up during the summer of 2015, Plawecki was often labeled by scouts as an "offensive catcher," mostly due to his average defensive skills, short, simple swing and impressive contact rate...

Things you should know about tonight's game...
1) Matz's return from a stint on the DL was not much better than his start that preceded it. David Wright has played another game on his rehab stint with St. Lucie and is still hitless against High-A pitching.
Wright's box score, quite obviously, takes a backseat to the fact that he's on the Mets' comeback trail and playing in professional baseball games again.
On Thursday night, Wright went 0-3 in six innings at third base. It was Wright's fourth game in five days.
Steven Matz's return from the DL didn't go to plan.
Matz was shelled for his second straight start, as the Mets' southpaw was unable to last more than two innings against the Phillies. In his last start, Matz couldn't escape the first inning before heading to the DL.
On Thursday night, Matz allowed six runs (four earned) in two innings with a walk and two strikeouts.

SNY's Keith Hernandez spoke with Doug Williams on Thursday to discuss comments he made Wednesday night concerning Miami Marlins pitcher Jose Urena's right to pitch inside to Ronald Acuna of the Braves after Acuna had homered in five straight games
While noting that the intent should never be to hurt someone and that any pitches should brush batters off the plate or be "at waist level," Hernandez stood by what he said on Wednesday.
"I stand firmly by what I said, and I don't think the pitch was that terrible," Hernandez said.

Mets RHP Zack Wheeler entered Wednesday having won five straight starts. And with a healthy lead, that number can be pushed to six after another good outing.
Wheeler only tossed five innings due to a 95 pitch count, but he allowed just one run on five hits while striking out three and walking two.
In the beginning, Wheeler didn't breeze through his first batters the way he has recently. Instead, Adam Jones hit a single to center to score Jonathan Villar, who got on base with a single himself to kick off the bottom of the first.
