The Mets are said to be shopping Jon Niese, Dillon Gee and Bartolo Colon in an effort to acquire a shortstop better than Wilmer Flores, while trying to hold on to their young pitching prospects (Cerrone, Nov. 11).
The two teams talked both early and late last off season, but nothing ever materialized, despite continuing to scout one another during Spring Training (Cerrone, Oct. 20).
For instance, last winter, the Mets offered Jon Niese to the Mariners for SS Brad Miller, but a deal never worked out (Gammons, Aug. 19). Also, the Mets and Mariners reportedly talked about a deal for 22-year-old 2B-SS Nick Franklin (Rubin, Feb. 24), who was eventually traded to the Rays in the David Price three-team deal.
In addition to Miller, the M's also have 24-year-old Triple-A SS Chris Taylor, all while reportedly working hard to sign free-agent SS Hanley Ramirez, who is expected to sign a six- or seven-year deal (MLBTR, Nov. 10).
Taylor hit .287 with in 136 at-bats for the Mariners this season, prior to which he hit .328 with 5 HR, 37 RBI and 14 stolen bases in 302 at-bats in Triple-A.
