According to Will Leitch, the Mets have the 10th-most tortured fanbase in baseball, meaning there are nine other teams more "deserving" of a Championship.
"Mets fans will be appalled to find themselves this low, but seriously, you guys, you were on the winning side of the Buckner play," Leitch explains. "The Mets have won two World Series since they came into the league in 1962; that's as many as the other seven teams who came into existence that decade have combined."
In Leitch's view, fans of the Astros, Rangers, Orioles, Royals, Brewers, Pirates, Mariners, Indians and Cubs have all suffered more than we have. That may be true, but it doesn't make the last seven years feel any less painful.
The fact is, the Mets have been in the postseason once in the last 13 seasons, and that's with the Wild Card. What's sad is that they probably would have been in the postseason seven years in a row during the late 80s, early 90s. But, the Wild Card didn't exist.
Instead, I've seen them in the playoffs just five times during my 30 years of watching baseball. I know it could be worse, which is why I was happy to root for the Pirates this past October, but knowing other teams are more frustrated doesn't make me any less anxious.
