Now Commenting On:

The Mets got 13 hits, but were just 2-for-15 with runners in scoring position, leaving 11 men on base, during Sunday's loss to the Pirates.

"We left a lot of guys at third base," said Terry Collins, a week after scoring 25 runs in three days. "You think you're out of it, you think you're swinging good, and it comes back. It's just one of those games where we didn't get the runs in.?

Their results with runners in scoring position is weak. They are not very good at situational hitting, going with the pitch and just putting the ball in play. This has been going on for years. That said, even if bumped up to average, it would only add on around 10 extra runs on the season, which I don't think would drastically alter their record. The problem isn't so much how little they hit with runners in scoring position, it's how they hit... period.
