The Mets have designated OF Kirk Nieuwenhuis for assignment, the team announced.
OF Darrell Ceciliani will be promoted from Triple-A Las Vegas and join the Mets for Tuesday's game, the team said after Monday's game.
The left-handed hitting Ceciliani, 24, was hitting .336 with five home runs and 17 RBI in 113 at-bats with Triple-A Las Vegas.
He is well known around the team for his strong defensive skills, with Triple-A manager Wally Backman recently telling SNY.TV's Robert Brender that Ceciliani has a similar read to Juan Lagares.
The Mets drafted Ceciliani during the fourth round of the 2009 Draft.
Matthew Cerrone: He has not have a very prolific hitting career, but I've heard his timing is better this season and that is helping him get much better contact against off-speed pitches than he's had in the past. In the end, though, he's a left-handed bat off the bench who plays a nice outfield. He's not Lagares, but may be better than Kirk. I was always told he's a left-fielder, but we'll see how he does in other spots. Mets fans will love how hard he plays. He's a Backman disciple, having played for him in Brooklyn and Las Vegas. He's been described to me by insiders as, "a nice role player, not an every-day guy, sort of the bench-version of a young Lenny Dykstra."
