Dom Smith was initially slotted in a spot that has become normal for him over the last week or so -- hitting second in the order and playing left field.
A sore right thumb kept him out of Sunday's game, however. After the game, manager Mickey Callaway said Smith will undergo an MRI and was not available off the bench during the Mets' 7-1 loss in Arizona.
Aaron Altherr played left field in Smith's stead Sunday. The injury wasn't affecting him Saturday, when he was 2-for-5 with a solo homer to dead center field.
Smith has been a boon for the top of the Mets' lineup lately. Over the last week, the first-baseman-turned-outfielder is 10-for-21 with two homers. He's also excelled in a pinch-hitting role off the bench all season long.
In 2019, the former first-rounder is batting .365/.467/.571 with three homers and eight RBI.
Altherr has played sparingly since the Mets signed claimed him off waivers from the Giants on May 23. He clubbed a homer in his first plate appearance with the team and that is his lone hit in seven at-bats for the club.
