Dominic Smith is making his first career start in the outfield on Tuesday night when he will play left field in the Mets' road matchup against Rockies at Coors FIeld.
Smith is shifting to the outfield in the absence of Jay Bruce and Yoenis Cespedes, who are both on the disabled list. Bruce landed on the disabled list earlier in the day on Tuesday after playing in just one game since last Wednesday.
Smith told reporters before Tuesday's game that he had a chance to work in the outfield at Coors Field on Monday and is excited about the opportunity.
"We've got some good outfielders who are going to help me out a lot and take a lot of pressure off of me, so my job is pretty simple," he said.
The 23-year-old Smith saw some playing time in the outfield earlier this season with Triple-A Las Vegas and most recently played three innings in left field on Friday in the Mets' 7-3 loss to the D-Backs. He made two putouts.
Smith is hitting .211 with one home run and one RBI in eight major league games this season for the Mets.
