The Mets are not looking at a long rebuild -- instead planning to contend in 2019 -- interim GM John Ricco said on Friday at Citi Field.
How the Mets will do that remains to be seen.
They have $92.5 million committed to payroll for the 2019 season, and superstars Manny Machado and Bryce Harper will be on the free agent market this offseason -- though their asking price might be well beyond what the Mets are willing to consider.
Ricco said the Mets aren't actively trying to trade Jacob deGrom and/or Noah Syndergaard before the July 31 trade deadline -- something SNY's Andy Martino has been reporting.
Instead, the Mets are expected to consider trading Zack Wheeler, Steven Matz, Jeurys Familia, Asdrubal Cabrera, Todd Frazier, Wilmer Flores, Jerry Blevins, and others.
