The Mets' plans for Jeff McNeil are changing out of necessity.
With veteran infielders Jed Lowrie and Todd Frazier both nursing injuries, McNeil -- who's only played infield as a professional but was set to primarily be an outfielder in 2019 -- will now take more reps at third base, Mickey Callaway said Friday. McNeil will split his time between third and left field and will start at third base Sunday against the Cardinals.
It's uncertain whether Lowrie (knee) or Frazier (oblique) will be ready for Opening Day, which is less than three weeks away, so the Mets want to be ready in the event both players aren't recovered in time.
"We're going to make sure we're prepared if that happens," Callaway said.
McNeil hit his first home run of Spring Training on Friday and also had an eventful day in left field, at one point falling to the warning track after jumping to try to catch a ball hit over his head.
