With the 2020 MLB season still paused, let's dip into the Mets mailbag...
@Mikempo926: Will the Mets sign Millie Betts?
I freakin love the exact wording of this question.
@Verd25: How are you still a beat reporter?
@Will10166102: Favorite met of all time?
David Wright, Ron Darling, Todd Zeile, Keith Hernandez, Carlos Beltran, Ike Davis, R.A. Dickey, Josh Thole. That would also be a rollicking dinner party.
@Mddosk: Is the season gonna be played this year?
Look for Opening Day in late June/early July. That's the current thinking, at least.
@B4Pitch: In the case that MLB moves forward with the most recent plan presented, how much more would it say about our team if we manage to be consistently competitive with the Nats and Yankees....rather than the Nats and Braves? Or is there a difference at all?
That plan is not likely to happen. But for the sake of argument, we'd probably agree that the Braves, while good, are not as good as the Yankees. Therefore, beating the Yanks would say more about the team than beating the Bravos.
@metsnation4: What can we expect out of Cespedes? Is he ever going to return to a form of his 2015 self?
Hard to imagine he will. That was a long time ago. Note to Roc Nation sports: You have permission to use this response in the next hype video that you assemble for Yoenis to tweet out. Not that you would ask.
@ronmelsabillon: Futuro de Cespedes?
El futuro de Céspedes es turbio.
@OrlandoAviles14: Do you extend Syndergaard coming off surgery at a discount? Will they re-sign Stroman? Will they use the $$ coming off the books from Cespedes leaving to sign a big time slugger or pitcher especially if they don't re-sign Stroman?
Everyone wants to know about extensions, but it's impossible to say what will happen when we don't know who will own the team next year.
@projectsnyc: Why not bring Matt Harvey back for a look?
Bridges burned. Not happening.
@EsqLogan: Who are Mr. Met's real parents?
Grandma and Grandpa Met. Grandma Met's maiden name is Dodger.
@Mikey_Mele15: Why do you hate the black Mets jerseys so much???
They are ugly.
@jorge_eckardt31: Why is J.D. Davis, who had a .895 OPS in 453 PAs last season, not viewed as a must-have in the everyday lineup?
Lack of track record and defense in LF? They like him though, and he'll play a lot.
@greg_nicholls5: Lots of "keyboard tough guys" responding here. smh. Considering the makeup of the Mets roster, will a condensed short season be an advantage or disadvantage?
The mute function is a beautiful thing, Greg. Interesting question. I guess a shorter sample can benefit flawed teams, right? A 162-game season is long enough to provide an accurate picture of team quality, while the postseason is short enough to be fluky. It's plausible that a so-so team could play hot for 80-100 games more easily than 162.
The Mets are good, but they lost Zack Wheeler in free agency and Noah Syndergaard to injury. They have a very shaky closer in Edwin Diaz. They are not a strong defensive team. Offensively they are counting on repeat seasons from Pete Alonso, Jeff McNeil, J.D.Davis and a few others. Perhaps this issue will be less glaring during a shorter season.
