With the 2020 MLB season still on pause, let's dip into the mailbag to answer some Mets questions ...
@MikeKan67783465 How good of a fielder was Rey Ordonez vis a vis today's best shortstops
I liked this question. But my first thought was, I'm not a scout and wasn't even covering baseball in 2000. So I reached out to Steve Phillips, who was Ordonez's GM and is now a Sirius/XM host covering the current game. Few on earth are better positioned to answer this one.
Then some guy named @JayJr045 tweeted at our questioner: "What does he know . You should draft your own co clussions [SIC]."
You're right, Jay Jr. I'm not qualified to answer. And please don't take that tone with me.
"Interestingly, Ordonez doesn't grade out very well defensively other than 1999. He isn't Andrelton Simmons, who is consistently the best defender and a better hitter.
"Ordonez had so much flash and style and the great errorless streak. He was a liability with the bat but fortunately we were able to compensate for his lack of offense with the rest of our lineup. And his defense was worth it.
"Ordonez was an entertainer and fans loved watching him play defense. Pitchers liked having him behind them."
Thanks for the in-depth insight, Steve. Take that, JayJr045.
@JetsNeedJeudy Do you think the Arizona thing will go through and if so do you think they'll have Gary Keith and Ron doing their game
We're a long way until it "goes through," but this is a serious proposal with a lot of work behind it. Before any of us even heard about it, the folks involved in the planning had already obtained tentative approval, including from the trusted Dr. Anthony Fauci.
But even the people most optimistic about this plan cast it as just one among several options, and understand that the coronavirus -- not humans -- will decide this for us.
As for Gary, Keith and Ron's involvement, the planning hasn't gotten to that stage yet with any local broadcast. But since a part of this idea is about preserving the TV revenue that fuels the industry, you'd have to think as many broadcast teams as possible would be involved, likely from a remote location.
@weryavah I missed if this question was answered previously...Will the Mets look to add another pitcher that is currently out there?
I assume you're asking this because the Mets lost Noah Syndergaard to Tommy John surgery. No, I don't see the Mets adding another starter to replace him. They plan on using Michael Wacha, Rick Porcello and Steven Matz.
@charleswmartin Why does MLB The Show 20 have Yo in LF? Was he really healthy or virtually is now healthy?
Clearly, digital Yoenis is healthy. As for human Yoenis, Brodie Van Wagenen would not give me an update.
@NosajF518 If you had to pick a centerpiece to build a team around would you choose McNeil or Alonso?
Funny, that was just discussed on a BNNY taped today. The question was if we'd take Alonso or deGrom, but Anthony Recker made an interesting point: He chose deGrom, but said it would have been a tougher call if the other choice had been McNeil.
Anthony's reasoning was that McNeil brings defensive versatility and is a force at the top of the order. I have a hard time choosing between McNeil and Alonso, and while logic dictates picking McNeil, the gut feeling is to hold onto the guy who has that ineffable, face-of-the- franchise quality -- and that's Alonso.
Can I just have them both?
@Friedyramfan Any chance Lugo becomes a starting [pitcher]
Nope. Poor Seth Lugo is locked in the bullpen against his will.
@NYJ3Mets If they cancel the season, where does the money come from to sign players?
It's a good point. Every team will face an unprecedented revenue shortfall because of this shutdown.
One imagines it will have a profound impact on free agent spending across the board. Think of how many other industries have already been forced to cut payroll. Baseball will not be immune.
