The Mets need to cut down to 25 players and set a Wild Card roster by Wednesday's night's Wild Card game against the Giants at Citi Field.
The buzz from Citi Field is that they'll probably end up starting left-handed hitting 1B Lucas Duda against Giants LHP Madison Bumgarner, as opposed to James Loney. In that case, it's possible Loney is left off the roster entirely, because they'll need Eric Campbell to be a right-handed bat off the bench. Also, Terry Collins said Sunday that Seth Lugo or Robert Gsellman will be left behind, since one of the two of them will be needed to start Game 2 of the NLDS, in the event the Mets win Wednesday.
In either case, the Mets need to select 25 of these guys to stay, and the edge of the roster is very difficult to figure out...
|Travis d'Arnaud||Jose Reyes||Yoenis Cespedes||Noah Syndergaard|
|Rene Rivera||Asdrubal Cabrera||Jay Bruce||Jeurys Familia|
|Kevin Plawecki||T.J. Rivera||Curtis Granderson||Addison Reed|
|Lucas Duda||Michael Conforto||Jerry Blevins|
|Kelly Johnson||Alejandro De Aza||Fernando Salas|
|Eric Campbell||Brandon Nimmo||Hansel Robles|
|Matt Reynolds||Juan Lagares||Lugo or Gsellman|
|Ty Kelly||Josh Smoker|
For instance, without needing Bartolo Colon and one of Gsellman and Lugo, how many relief pitchers do they take? Do they need three catchers? Should they take an extra left-handed reliever? Is Juan Lagares able to swing a bat? I think it's too difficult to project, frankly.
Personally, against the Giants for one game, I'd rather have at least one extra left-handed reliever, and Lagares to bring in for defense (in the event it's close and late and the Mets are winning).
Collins will talk with the media during tomorrow's 1 pm workout at Citi Field, so I imagine we'll get some clarity and insight then. In the meantime, speculate away...
By the way, given that Noah Syndergaard is starting Wednesday, I assume this means Bartolo Colon will start Game 1 of a potential NLDS in Chicago, after which Lugo and Gsellman will start some combination of Games 2 and 3, meaning Syndergaard will start Game 4 and Colon would return to start Game 5. But, first things first, play Wednesday and take it one step at a time...
