Yoenis Cespedes has been placed on the 10-day DL due to a mild right hip flexor strain, with Phillip Evans called up from Triple-A Las Vegas.
The DL stint is backdated to May 14, meaning Cespedes will be eligible to return on May 24.
The hip injury is the same ailment Cespedes had been playing through recently. He was out of the lineup on Tuesday, but was available to pinch hit.
"It's the same lingering injury," GM Sandy Alderson said on Tuesday. "Over the last several days, he had reported that he had not been improving. We decided to do a precautionary MRI this morning which revealed a mild strain."
The Mets spoke with Cespedes after the MRI, and he said things had really not improved since Sunday. At that point, Alderson said it was "in the best interest of him for the moment" to not be in the lineup.
