The Mets announced on Saturday that they've placed Dominic Smith on the 10-day injured list.
Smith had a stress reaction in his left foot, leading to the move.
In a corresponding move, the Mets selected the contract of outfielder Aaron Altherr from the Syracuse Mets.
Smith told reporters on Saturday that he felt the injury pop up last week, but initially tried to play through the pain.
"You feel something and you don't think much of it," Smith said. "We're all competitors here. We all play through little things.... I brought it up last night to the training staff. It just was getting worse.
"It's definitely a bummer, something that I didn't think was this severe. I woke up this morning and I felt really good ... I was excited about today, and then to get in and hear the news, it just hurt a lot. I'm very disappointed, very sad, but I'm just going to do everything I can to get back out there as soon as I can."
In 88 games this season, Smith has a .278 average at the plate with 10 home runs.
Altherr appeared in six games for the Mets earlier this year and has hit .182 with one home run in that brief stint in the majors.
