The Mets have placed SS Ruben Tejada on waivers, according to Adam Rubin of ESPN.
The move paves the way for the Mets to rid themselves of having to pay a large portion of the Tejada's salary. The infielder was due to make $3 million this season. By cutting Tejada more than 15 days before Opening Day, the Mets would only have to pay him $500,000.
If Asdrubal Cabrera opens up the season on the disabled list, the Mets are comfortable with SS Wilmer Flores starting the season at shortstop, and SS Matt Reynolds serving as a backup.
Sandy Alderson declined to comment, as teams are prohibited by the league from discussing waivers.
