Mets setup man Jeurys Familia is heading to the IL due to a shoulder injury, manager Mickey Callaway said before Wednesday's game.
According to Callaway, Familia -- who has shoulder soreness -- received an injection on Tuesday.
Familia told the Mets about his shoulder discomfort on Tuesday morning before undergoing an MRI that revealed a Bennett lesion, which is defined as "a bony spur at the posterior glenoid that is often seen in baseball players and usually asymptomatic. However, it sometimes becomes painful, but the mechanism of throwing pain is still unknown."
Callaway added that the Bennett lesion/bone spur is something Familia has been dealing with for years.
The Mets are calling up LHP Ryan O'Rourke to replace Familia on the roster. The 31-year-old O'Rourke has not pitched in the majors since 2016.
Familia had been struggling so far this season, but showed glimpses on Tuesday night despite blowing the save.
