The Mets have interest in signing free agent INF Ryan Goins, who was recently non-tendered by the Blue Jays, reports Joel Sherman of the NY Post.
Sherman suggests that if signed, Goins could potentially form one side of a second base platoon with either Wilmer Flores or T.J. Rivera (who is recovering from Tommy John surgery).
Goins, 29, hit .237/.286/.356 with nine HR in 143 games this past season for the Blue Jays. A left-handed hitter, Goins hit all nine of his home runs against right-handed pitchers.
He played 383 1/3 innings at second base in 2017, where he was worth three defensive runs saved. Goins also saw time at shortstop and third base.
The Mets have prioritized adding a second baseman this offseason, with GM Sandy Alderson saying Sunday night at the GM meetings that Asdrubal Cabrera would likely be used mainly at third base in 2018.
Second basemen the Mets have been linked to this offseason include Ian Kinsler (Tigers), Cesar Hernandez (Phillies), Jason Kipnis (Indians), and free agents Neil Walker and Eduardo Nunez.
