The Mets activated Jay Bruce from the disabled list on Friday and also called catcher Tomas Nido up from Double-A Binghamton.
To make room on the 25-man roster, Dominic Smith and Jack Reinheimer were optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas.
The move for Nido comes after catcher Devin Mesoraco left Thursday's game early due to a neck issue he was sent for an MRI on.
As an alternative to sending Smith down, the Mets could have simply placed Mesoraco on the 10-day DL. But they will seemingly operate with three catchers instead -- assuming Mesoraco is available to play.
Playing time for Smith, who homered on Wednesday during what was his only start during his brief call-up from August 20-23, wasn't expected to be plentiful. With Bruce back, he will get time at first base (where Wilmer Flores is also getting lots of time), and the outfield.
Either way, Smith will likely be back with the Mets when rosters expand to 40 players on Sept. 1.
