The Mets are currently working to pare down their current list of candidates to lead baseball operations from five to two or three, and will begin second round interviews this week.
As we reported Friday, Doug Melvin, Chaim Bloom, Kim Ng, Brodie Van Wagenen and Casey Close are in the running. Two or three of those will soon be voted off the island, and the survivors will meet with Fred and Jeff Wilpon.
The Mets plan to make candidates available to the media as a part of their second round interviews. That could begin any time this week.
If you're looking for clues into who might emerge with the job, I can tell you that the team has done considerable background work on Ng. She is under serious consideration for a second round interview.
Melvin has also generated a lot of buzz. Rival executives most often tout Van Wagenen, Bloom and Melvin.
But truly, all of the remaining five are serious candidates, and we won't pretend that there is a frontrunner before the elder Wilpon has had a chance to meet with any of them.
As Ishmael said in Moby-Dick, "I promise nothing complete; because any human thing supposed to be complete, must for that very reason infallibly be faulty." You should read this report in that spirit. But we're trying!
