The Mets announced they have signed LHP Aaron Laffey to a Minor League contract with an invite to Spring Training.

Laffey, 27, made 22 appearances and 16 starts for the Blue Jays in 2012, going 4-6 with a 4.56 ERA. He allowed 37 walks and 17 home runs while striking out 48 in 100 2/3 innings. He made 11 starts for Triple-A Las Vegas as well, going 3-5 with a 4.52 ERA in 63 2/3 innings.

Laffey is 25-29 with a 4.38 ERA in 148 appearances and 65 starts in his six year career with the Indians, Mariners, Yankees and Blue Jays.

The Mets are reportedly going to bottom-feed the bullpen market this winter after mostly making poor investments in the bullpen last winter. This type of move fits into that strategy - I expect more moves like this for the bullpen as the winter progresses with hopes one or more of these arms standout during camp. In the case of Laffey, he is someone who can go in and out of the rotation and can ultimately become the veteran, left-handed presence Terry Collins wants in the bullpen if he sticks.
