I recall during the Winter Meetings that the Mets were among teams with interest in Jamey Carroll and Cesar Izturis, who I assume would be offered minor-league deals with a chance to compete in spring training.
If you look at the roster, there is a lot up in the air, which is sort of what Alderson is telling Rubin in that post. I mean, if Ike is traded, or they sign Stephen Drew -- or both, or neither -- it totally changes their needs. And, to a certain extent, this will continue through Spring Training. But, one thing the organization kept saying at the end of last season was that they were hellbent on beginning 2014 with a set 25-man roster. They did not want to go in to the season with a variety of platoons and positions in flux, mixing and matching through April and May. This report from Rubin indicates that may be more difficult than they anticipated.
