The Mets will acquire Tigers OF Yoenis Cespedes, according to ESPN's Buster Olney, Chicago reporter Bruce Levin, and FoxSports.com's Ken Rosenthal.

Latest Update

Detroit could be moving Cespedes and center fielder Rajai Davis in a three-team deal, according to Detroit beat writer Tony Paul (July 31, 3:45 pm).

The White Sox were aggressive in trying for Cespedes, but fell short, reports Nightengale, who says a rival executive believes he will end up with the Mets (July 31, 3:46 pm).

Previous Reports and Reaction

The Mets are focused on Cespedes (July 31, 2:55 pm), though nothing is 'serious,' according to Daily News reporter Andy Martino (July 31, 2:35 pm).

The had not been interested, but the two teams rekindled trade talks Wednesday night (July 31, 2:26 pm).

In addition to Cespedes, the Tigers are also open to dealing Rajai Davis (July 30, 2015), who has played 37 games in center field this season.

Smith happy to produce in win 00:01:22
New York Mets first baseman Dom Smith was happy he was able to knock in 4 RBIs after committing a game-ending error the night before.

The key for Dominic Smith was keeping an even-keeled approach, he said following the Mets' 11-4 win over the San Francisco Giants on Saturday.

Smith was less than 24 hours removed from costing the Mets a gem of a game from pitcher Jacob deGrom.

Pablo Sandoval blooped a ball into shallow left field in the 10th inning and Smith miscommunicated with shortstop Amed Rosario on the play. The ball fell to the ground and the Giants' Alex Dickerson, hustling around the bases on the play, crossed home plate for the walk-off win.

Pete Alonso launches 33rd HR 00:00:14
New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso's 33rd homer of the season gives him 75 RBI on the year, a new Mets rookie record.

Not a bad "day off" for Mets first baseman Pete Alonso on Saturday.

The rookie began his day on the bench and by the end of it, he set another franchise rookie record.

Pinch hitting in the sixth inning, Alonso hit home run No. 33 on the year, a three-run shot. Coming into the game, Alonso was in a 3-for-30 slump coming out of the All-Star break and his Home Run Derby win.

Smith happy to produce in win 00:01:22
New York Mets first baseman Dom Smith was happy he was able to knock in 4 RBIs after committing a game-ending error the night before.

A day after a costly error in the outfield, Dom Smith's bat led the way for the Mets in an 11-4 win over the Giants. >> Box score

Five things to know about Saturday's game

1) Smith had a tough Friday evening in the outfield, but his fortunes have since changed drastically. After his costly error less than 24 hours earlier, Smith scored the first run of the game with a bomb of a solo home run, which went over the deepest part of Oracle Park, Triples Alley in right-center field. Smith then recorded his second RBI of the game on a single in the fourth inning. As the Mets were padding runs on late in the ninth inning, Smith added two more RBI, bringing his game total to four with a single.

2) Smith was in the game early because Pete Alonso was not. Skipper Mickey Callaway gave Alonso the day off and started Smith at first base, despite Alonso's wishes to play. It paid off with Smith's early performance, but Alonso, despite not starting due to his rare day off, still found a way to contribute. Coming off the bench in the sixth inning, Alonso hit a 444-foot, three-home homer. Alonso reached 75 RBI on the season with the shot, a team rookie record.

Dom Smith HR give Mets lead 00:00:17
New York Mets first baseman Dom Smith clubs a solo shot to give the Mets a 1-0 lead in San Francisco.

It's a massive 421 feet to the Triples Alley in right-center field of Oracle Park out in the Bay Area. The baseball that Dom Smith connected with early against the San Francisco Giants had a birds-eye view of it.

The Mets have played plenty of extra innings in the first two games of their series against the Giants but there haven't been a ton of runs.

Smith made sure there was at least one early on Saturday, as he crushed a solo home run in the second inning off of pitcher Jeff Samardzija. Smith semn the ball over the part of the Giants' home field that is the deepest part of the ballpark.

The Mets have struggled to score runs through the first two games of their series with the Giants, pushing just two runs across in 26 innings.

But as they look to get the offense going on Saturday, they'll do so without Pete Alonso.

Dominic Smith will get the start at first base on Saturday against Giants right-hander Jeff Samardzija, as Mickey Callaway looks to give his rookie first baseman a bit of a breather.

"I was talking to [Todd] Frazier the other day, just about his experience, and he said coming out of that Home Run Derby the year he did it, he was worn out. We kind of took it out of Pete's hands. We've got the righty going today, we've got the lefty tomorrow, give him a day and let him get after it tomorrow."

Mets lose in extras again 00:01:49
Mickey Callaway, Dominic Smith, Amed Rosario and Jacob deGrom on Smith's 10th inning error that led to the Mets 1-0 loss

For the second straight night in San Francisco, a pitchers' duel carried the ball game into extra innings. And while Friday's game didn't last 16 innings like the previous night, it ended in a loss just as deflating.

In the bottom of the 10th inning, with two runners on, Jacob Rhame forced a weak pop up to shallow left field off the bat of Pablo Sandoval. With Dominic Smith coming in and Amed Rosario drifting out, there was a brief moment of hesitation Smith's part, and just like that, the ball dropped to the grass and a hustling Alex Dickerson scored all the way from first base, handing the Mets a 1-0 loss

Smith was charged with an error on the game-ending play.

Mets suffer another tough loss 00:00:54
Jacob deGrom struck out 10 over 7 stellar innings of work but Dom Smith's error in the 10th dealt the Mets another heartbreaking loss, 1-0

The Mets wasted another gem from Jacob deGrom, and the game's only run scored on a Dominic Smith error as the Giants beat the Mets 1-0 in 10 innings. >> Box score

Five things to know about Friday's game

1) In the bottom of the ninth inning of a scoreless game, the Mets turned the ball to Jacob Rhame. Coming off of his one-game suspension, Rhame walked two batters in the inning, but with two away, Joe Panik struck out to send the game into extra innings. The Mets stuck with Rhame to start the 10th. After walking Alex Dickerson to start the inning, Pablo Sandoval blooped a ball to left, and after Amed Rosario and Dominic Smith had some miscommunication, the ball fell in for an error charged to Smith, allowing Dickerson to score the winning run all the way from first base.

2) Jacob deGrom dazzled through seven innings on Friday night. Though the Mets couldn't give him any run support, deGrom was as dominant as he's been all season, allowing just three hits while striking out 10. He allowed just one extra-base hit, a double to Kevin Pillar in the fifth. DeGrom was pulled after 108 pitches, 74 of which was strikes. He also passed Ron Darling for sixth place on the Mets' franchise strikeout list.

In Pete Alonso, Jeff McNeil, Michael Conforto, Seth Lugo and Jacob deGrom, the Mets have five players who are worth a combined 12.2 WAR this season, according to FanGraphs.com.

The above group, plus Brandon Nimmo, means Brodie Van Wagenen will, at the very least, enter next season with a bonafide ace, a unique and versatile reliever and a legit core of young position players. Which is why I want him to sell at the trade deadline.

It may be a long shot, but I do believe the Mets can claw their way in to the top group competing for a berth into this season's Wild Card game. The thing is, even if they do pull off a miracle and get in and past the one-game playoff, I'm not confident they have the ammunition to take down the Cubs or Braves, let alone the Dodgers, in a five- or seven-game series.

Former Met Matt Harvey's time with the Los Angeles Angels may have come to an end.

The 30-year-old right-hander was designated for assignment by the Angels on Friday, a day after allowing six earned runs in six innings against the Astros. Harvey allowed two more home runs on Thursday, giving him a total of 13 homers allowed this season in just 59.2 innings.

Signed this offseason to a one-year, $11 million guaranteed deal, Harvey has scuffled all season long, pitching to a 3-5 record with a 7.09 ERA. In 12 starts this season, Harvey has allowed opposing left-handed hitters to bat .295 against him. His strikeout numbers are also down, as he's punched out just 39 batters this season in those 59.2 innings, while walking 29 hitters as well.

With the trade deadline just 12 days away. Mickey Callaway updated the status of Zack Wheeler, whose name has come up in rumors time and time again.

"Wheeler played catch, I think he went 70-100-120 (feet), 10 apiece, and then threw 13 off the mound, which is more just continued glorified catch off of a slope," Callaway said before Friday's game with the Giants. "We'll see how he comes in tomorrow and go from them."

Friday night would have been Wheeler's turn to start, thought he right-hander remains on the Injured List with a right shoulder impingement. Walker Lockett will make his third start of the season for the Mets in Wheeler's place.

The Mets announced Friday that the team has recalled pitchers Tyler Bashlor and Stephen Nogosek and optioned pitcher Chris Mazza and SS Luis Guillorme to Triple-A Syracuse.

The move gives Mickey Callaway more options out of the bullpen for Friday's game after Thursday's contest lasted 16 innings, with the Mets using a total of eight pitchers in an eventual 3-2 loss. Mazza was saddled with the decision, allowing two runs on five hits with a chance to close the game out in the 16th.

Guillorme logged five games played with the Mets since being recalled on July 2. He's appeared in 17 games overall this season, hitting .182/.217/.182.

The Mets dispatched Ruben Amaro Jr., special assistant to the general manager Brodie Van Wagenen, to Phoenix to scout the Brewers/Diamondbacks game on Thursday, according to major league sources.

Milwaukee is interested in trading for Mets pitchers Zack Wheeler and Noah Syndergaard. The Mets are far more likely to trade Wheeler, but that will depend on how his shoulder injury impacts his value.

According to a source, Amaro's is "floating" around to various scouting assignments right now, which is standard pre-deadline activity. The Mets are doing legwork on various trade possibilities, including extensive scouting of Yankees prospects.

Mets outfielder Brandon Nimmo is taking the next step in his recovery from a bulging disc, but could still be about a month away from returning.

Nimmo, who had been shut down from baseball activities for 30 days on June 18 after suffering a setback during a rehab assignment, has ended that shutdown and began swinging a bat this week, according to MLB.com's Anthony DiComo.

While Nimmo has ended his shutdown, he is not expected to begin a rehab assignment until August at the earliest, notes DiComo.

New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso liked the team's fight against the Giants despite losing in the bottom of the 16th inning.

The Mets scored their first run of the game in the first inning on Thursday night, and they wouldn't score again until Friday morning.

After an extremely well-pitched game from the starters, Noah Syndergaard and Madison Bumgarner, the game went to extra innings locked at 1-1.

And it stayed that way for six more innings.

Giants outlast Mets in 16 00:01:26
The New York Mets took a late lead off of first baseman Pete Alonso's solo home run but fall short to a Giants rally to walk it off.

The Mets and Giants played a game that just didn't seem to want to end, but the Giants ultimately found a way to win 3-2 in 16 innings. >> Box score

Six things to know about Thursday's game

1) Pete Alonso entered his 16th inning at-bat 0-6. The Mets hadn't scored since the top of the first inning, and and 15 innings later, Alonso delivered with his 32nd home run of the year. The Mets had used all of their available pitchers out of the bullpen and every player off of their bench as well, making it the perfect time for Alonso to deliver in the clutch.

But Chris Mazza couldn't hold the lead. He allowed back-to-back doubles to Alex Dickerson and Brandon Crawford to tie the game at 2-2. The Giants then loaded the bases with nobody out, and Donovan Solano delivered the game-winning single.

The Mets have officially tabbed righty Walker Lockett to start on Saturday against the Giants in place of the injured Zack Wheeler.

Wheeler, of course, was placed on the injured list on Tuesday with right shoulder fatigue, an injury that could complicate things for the Mets as the July 31st trade deadline approaches. Wheeler is 6-6 on the season with a 4.69 ERA, but with his contract up at the end of the season, he's been at the center of a number of trade rumors.

Everyone involved insists that Zack Wheeler's shoulder injury is not serious, and that he will be back in no time.

We take that at face value, but there's still a problem. Teams previously interested in trading for Wheeler are now nervous about his health.

Perhaps Wheeler will return from the IL in time to pitch well and assuage those concerns, but the Mets know that the timing of his injury might hurt his value to the point where keeping him and making a qualifying offer at the end of the season is the smarter move.

The Mets' current four-game winning streak is their longest since the middle of May. And while it's still a long shot, they are finally moving in the right direction when it comes to a potential miracle run to win a Wild Card spot and get to the playoffs.

Entering play this past weekend, the Mets had just a 4.1 percent chance of winning a Wild Card, according to calculations provided by FanGraphs. Following Wednesday's 14-4 win against the Twins, that number went to 9.2 percent.

Baseball Prospectus has the Mets' Wild Card chances at 9.8 percent.

Dominic Smith has emerged as a legitimate weapon for the Mets this season in a part-time role, proving his value to the team but potentially forcing himself off of it in the process.

While there hasn't been any serious buzz yet about the Mets trading Smith any time soon, his name has been out there simply because he might not have a place to play with the Mets going forward.

First things first: I wouldn't trade Dominic Smith.

I love his bat and he's looking surprisingly comfortable in left field, to the point where I don't think he'd be a liability even as an everyday player in that spot.

Mets react to timely home runs 00:01:21
Dominic Smith and Pete Alonso react to their home runs, while manager Mickey Callaway is jovial after the 14-4 win.

If any Mets fans still have concerns that Pete Alonso's Home Run Derby showing could hurt his swing in any way, the rookie gave 474 reasons to think otherwise on Wednesday.

In the top of the eighth inning of the Mets' 14-4 drubbing of the Twins, Alonso locked in to a back-up slider from Matt Magill. From the second the ball hit the bat, there was absolutely no doubt that the ball was leaving the park. The only question was how far it would fly.

As it turned out, the answer was 474 feet.

Mets big bats power 14-4 win 00:01:31
Dominic Smith gave the Mets the lead in the seventh inning, but Pete Alonso's monster home run wowed in the eighth in the 14-4 win.

The Mets hit a bunch of homers and took advantage of lots of shoddy defense by the Twins to sweep their two-game set on Wednesday afternoon in Minnesota >> Box score

Five things to know about Wednesday's game

1) With two outs in the top of the eighth and New York leading, 5-3, the Twins gave the Mets a gift when left fielder Eddie Rosario dropped what should've been a routine fly out by Adeiny Hechavarria. Two runs scored on the error as the Mets extended their lead to 7-3. Jeff McNeil then followed with an RBI double before Dominic Smith's RBI single made it 9-3, New York. Pete Alonso -- who had gone 0-for-4 up to that point -- then demolished a 474 foot two-run homer to the second level of the upper deck in left field to make it 11-3. The Mets added three runs against Twins position player Ehire Adrianza in the ninth inning.

The Mets announced on Wednesday that they have traded RHP Wilmer Font to the Blue Jays for cash considerations.

Font was DFA'd by the Mets, but he must have cleared waivers if the team was able to trade him.

New York initially traded for Font back in May with the Rays in exchange for 18-year-old prospect Neraldo Catalina. He was brought in to help out the bullpen early on in the season, but things didn't work out between both sides.

Font had a 4.94 ERA and 6.47 FIP in over 31 innings (15 appearances) with the Mets. He also allowed eight homers, and had a 24/13 strikeout-to-walk ratio.

Pete Alonso moonshot in 8th 00:00:19
Pete Alonso had a no-doubt home run in the 8th inning for his 31st this year. It hit the 3rd deck at Target Field in Minnesota.

The Twins may have gotten on the board first, but Amed Rosario tied it up quickly in the top of the third.

In his first at-bat of the day, Rosario took a Martin Perez cutter over the left field fence to make it a 1-1 game....

Two days after Zack Wheeler landed on the IL, putting a potential crimp in the Mets' ability to trade him before the July 31 deadline, the right-hander was out playing catch at Target Field in Minnesota.

Wheeler, who said Tuesday that the injury is a shoulder impingement, is eligible to be activated from the IL on July 22 (an off-day for the Mets), meaning he can potentially pitch two more times between now and the trade deadline.

Wheeler, who underwent an MRI, said Tuesday that the injury is something he has dealt with in the past, noting that he began feeling it halfway through his start against the Yankees as well as the entire outing against the Phillies.

Mets win 3rd straight game 00:01:34
Mickey Callaway, Edwin Diaz and Michael Conforto on Diaz escaping a 9th inning jam along withConforto's 4 hits and great catch.

Mickey Callaway knew he'd have to rely on the Mets' bullpen on Tuesday night, and the group answered the call and then some against a potent Twins lineup, leading to a 3-2 win.

Before the game, Callaway set a 75-80 pitch limit for Steven Matz, making his return to the rotation after a brief stint in the pen. After 68 pitches over four innings from the lefty, Callaway turned the ball over to the bullpen, where six relievers combined to hold the Twins scoreless over the course of five innings.

Robert Gsellman, Luis Avilan, Jeurys Familia, Justin Wilson, Seth Lugo and Edwin Diaz combined to keep the Twins' bats at bay, allowing a Michael Conforto fifth-inning RBI single to decide the game. Callaway said after the game that he believed this was the bullpen's best overall performance of the season.

Mets keep potent Twins in check 00:01:11
Michael Conforto had 4 hits and the beleaguered Mets bullpen tossed 5 scoreless innings as they won their 3rd straight game, 3-2

The Mets' bullpen pitched five shutout innings to help lead the way to a 3-2 victory over the Twins on Tuesday night.  >> Box score

Five things to know from Tuesday's game

1) Steven Matz gave the Mets four solid innings of work in his return to the rotation, allowing just two runs on five hits. First inning troubles have plagued him all season long, allowing 23 first inning runs in his first 17 starts, but he pitched an easy first inning on Tuesday in Minneapolis. His night came to an end after 68 pitches, slightly under the 75-80 pitch limit that Mickey Callaway set for him before the game.

Conforto flashes some leather 00:00:15
Michael Conforto robs Nelson Cruz of an extra-base hit with a great catch at the wall

Mets outfielder Michael Conforto flashed some leather on Tuesday vs. the Twins. In the bottom of the third inning, Nelson Cruz belted a ball to left-center field that looked like it was at least going to be an extra-base hit, but Conforto raced it down to make a leaping catch while crashing into the wall, robbing Cruz and ending the inning.

Wheeler talks shoulder injury 00:02:08
New York Mets pitcher Zack Wheeler discusses the severity of his shoulder injury and the results of a recent MRI.

Mets RHP Zack Wheeler gave his official diagnosis after hitting the IL on Monday, telling the media Tuesday it is a shoulder impingement that has been bothering him.

This is an ailment that Wheeler has dealt with in the past, noting that he began feeling it halfway through his start against the Yankees as well as the entire outing against the Phillies.

After receiving an MRI, Wheeler isn't too worried that this will keep him sidelined for too long.

The Mets (42-51, 15.0 GB in NL East) take on the Twins (58-34, 6 GA in AL Central) in the opening game of a brief, two-game series on Tuesday at 8:10 p.m.

Mets notes

The Mets are returning to Target Field for the first time since 2013, where they took all three games from the Twins that season. It took two visits to complete the series six years ago, as April weather in Minnesota forced a postponement and a return trip to complete the series in August... The Mets split a two-game series against the Twins at Citi Field earlier this season, but have won eight of their last nine games against them dating back to 2013... Amed Rosario is batting .287/.317/.431 with 11 doubles, four triples, three home runs, 24 RBI and nine walks in 50 games on the road this season... Coming off homers in back-to-back games for the first time since 2017, Robinson Cano is slashing .395/.422/.558 over his last 11 contest... Jeff McNeil's .366 batting average on the road is tops in all of baseball.

After Travis d'Arnaud had stunned Aroldis Chapman and the Yankees on the greatest night of his baseball life, the type of night the Mets gave up on waiting for, Buck Showalter had an interesting take that served as a reminder he's available to manage next season.

In Queens, perhaps?

With Rays catcher Travis d'Arnaud belting three homers on Monday night against the Yankees in the Bronx, it gave the Mets' self-loathing fan base (of which I am a member) an excuse to launch another "woe-is-us" campaign. To chalk this up as another "LOLMets" moment. But it wasn't one.

Were the Mets wrong to tender d'Arnaud a contract in the offseason only to DFA him after only 10 games and 25 plate appearnaces as he returned from Tommy John surgery? Yes. The smart move would've been to non-tender him in order to not waste that money.

Most expected the Mets to move on from d'Arnaud after they signed Wilson Ramos to be their starting catcher and added Devin Mesoraco on a minor league deal. For some reason, they didn't.

Mets GM Brodie Van Wagenen said last Friday that the team needed to face its "reality." Part of that reality meant realizing their place in the standings and trading Zack Wheeler before the July 31 trade deadline. On Monday, those plans took a hit.

Wheeler landing on the IL with right shoulder fatigue (reportedly precautionary, he's expected to be fine and return soon) makes any potential trade of him in the next 15 days more complicated. It doesn't torpedo those plans, but it does make Van Wagenen's job harder.

Assuming Wheeler is pretty much fine and returns to start on July 23 or shortly after, here are three scenarios that could play out...

Travis d'Arnaud nearly missed the team bus to Yankee Stadium on Monday, and the Yankees probably wish he had.

The Tampa Bay Rays catcher has suddenly emerged as a new Yankee-killer in the past month. D'Arnaud has four home runs in his last eight at-bats against the Yankees, which include a walk-off home run and a ninth inning, three-run go-ahead shot on Monday night that doomed the Bombers in a 5-4 loss.

D'Arnaud was responsible for driving in all five of Tampa Bay's runs, with two solo home runs off James Paxton, finishing the night 3-for-3 with a walk. He became the first catcher to hit three home runs in a game out of the leadoff spot, per Elias Sports Bureau.

The Mets are sending their most trusted evaluator, former GM Omar Minaya, to scout the Triple-A debut of Yankees pitching prospect Deivi Garcia on Monday night, according to major league sources.

The Yankees promoted Garcia, their top pitching prospect, after he started the Futures Game in Cleveland last week. At 20 years old, Garcia is the youngest player in Triple-A.

The Mets and Yankees have had many discussions about Noah Syndergaard and Zack Wheeler, stretching back to last winter. The Yankees will not trade Garcia for a rental player like Wheeler, who will be a free agent after this season.
